The Art of shoes

December 8, 2008

Mark Schwartz made a name for himself as an accomplished shoe designer. For the past 25 years, he has traveled the world gaining inspiration for his ideas from artists like Andy Warhol, who Schwartz beneficially watched at work and Roger Vivier who he cultivated his talents with for 5 years. Both Warhol and Vivier encouraged Schwartz to continue his capricious approach to fabricate his artistic style of shoes. He is producing exciting work by taking advantage of the spontaneity and movement that shoes can create when drawn on paper.

Very few artists have attempted what Schwartz is pioneering. Mark exaggerates the usual way individuals view shoes by playing off the already artistic shapes of footwear and creates art that exudes personality. The artist’s work is collected worldwide by both private and corporate clients.

Schwartz has always been fascinated by the shoe , the shape the movement, shoes create a mood all of their own, they scream sex , they are whimsical and take on another life in his paintings.

This website is intended for purchasing paintings by Mark Schwartz. All paintings are one of a kind. Please visit our blog spot as well. www.highheeledart.blogspot.com

gil carvalho’s shoes are at gregory’s, dallas

December 7, 2008

we interviewed shoe designer Gil Carvalho — listen to the way HE says it — about some of his favorite shoe styles for fall 2008. the side note to our fun little video is that Gil is a real GEM and i don’t know if it translates on video.

we arrived into his busy showroom in vegas and gave him a few minutes to freshen-up before the camera started rolling. he emerged from his make-shift parlor with sky-high, cherry red belted square-toe heels, the kind he’s becoming famous for. teeter-free he made a bee-line right over to our spot and gave us a genuine, shoe-centric interview. thanks gil.

we found the dynamite “shadow” patent platform pump at gregory’s shoes in dallas. if you’ve not heard of gregory’s, they carry styles from top shoe designers: christian dior, helmut lang, lanvin, jerome rousseau, luciano padovan and jimmy choo to name but a select few. and if you want your own “shadow” we say get them in a hurry.

Meet Gigi Favela

December 7, 2008

Meet Gigi Favela:
Following her dream to design highly wearable shoes that women would love, Monica Favela George left the corporate world of proposal writing. She took an intensive intro-to-shoes workshop (which her husband gifted for her 30th birthday), and headed to Europe armed only with her color theory and sculptural design background.

To realize her vision of becoming a shoe designer, she knocked on doors and asked the right people about small-quantity, artisinal factories until the right high quality Italian shoe factory presented itself. Encouraged by her team members; husband Bijoy who is CFO and head techie and 5-year old daughter Gabriella “Gigi” George who provides attitude checks and laughs, the first Gigi Favela collection premiered in 2006.

Best shot we got. Did we mention the Lady likes her Gelato? She does and with her pic she sent, “I love ice cream second only to shoes!” She’s witty too.

What is the Gigi Favela philosophy?
She keeps it simple and uses innovative materials. “Wearability is key, so I keep heel heights walk-able and use Poron® anti-shock/comfort material in the footbed to absorb impact.”

Give us 5 words describing your design style:
“Highly wearable fashion-fresh lovelies.”

Why Shoes?
The love of the shoe. Specifically, the love of the HEEL.” Favela George adds, “Try as I may to embrace the lower heel, I will always love the sculptural aspects and confidence that heels bring to a woman’s wardrobe.”

On the Shelves:
“The Fall 2008 collection was inspired by the archetypical action jackson female badass, as my collections always are. The “Moderno” mini-boot is for modern day females who are moving, one fabulously shoed foot in front of the other, FORWARD.”

Do you have what it takes to be a shoe designer?

December 7, 2008

What do Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and Giuseppe Zanotti have in common? They are all shoe designers who have elevated their craft of shoe making to a mesmerizing art form. Think you have what it takes to design a pair of shoes?

Get your creative juices flowing and your feet wet, so to speak, at International Shoemaking Design, which offers an intensive 2-day workshop for serious-minded footwear designers to hone your shoemaking skills, learn the anatomy of the foot and construction of a shoe. Upon completion, you’ll have made your very own mule, pump, sandal or boot style. In YOUR size, of course.

Based outside of Cleveland in Rocky River, Ohio, owner Sissy Puccio Aversa, a London-trained shoe designer/maker and certified Pedorthist, will privately walk you through an intensive workshop on what it takes to actually build a pair of shoes.
