the story of foot binding
December 9, 2008
These women’s “golden lotuses” are proof of a foot fetish on a national scale, with hobbled feet acting as another erogenous zone, the most forbidden of them all. Yet, As Wang surveys her tiny shoes, cocking her head from side to side, it’s clear she’s proud of her little feet. “There’s not a single other woman in Liuyicun who could fit their feet into my shoes,” she says. “When my generation dies, people won’t be able to see bound feet, even if they want to. ” — Lauren Tobin

“This is a win-win situation,” Gina says. “The kids are wonderful! I now have 50 children writing me letters. It really is about helping people.” To help support Gina’s project please visit www.ginaalexanderinc.com.
Both of these humanitarian ventures exist because an individual identified a need and decided to take action. The momentum from the initial act of “What can I do to help?” continues to grow and flourish because of true intention. One step, one pair of shoes or one handbag at a time–everything helps.
strutt couture
December 8, 2008
Who They Are: Strutt Couture is the brainchild of Ian O’Connor who in 2003 set out to create a collection of shoes rich in materials for today’s woman, who appreciates luxurious footwear.
What They Do: “Strutt is a state of mind, a culture of design derived from many different sensations and experiences.”
Why: “Every woman should own more then just one pair of beautiful shoes.” They deliver unique, exciting footwear designs and true glamour, the ethos of Strutt Couture, which is the driving force behind the company.
Inspiration: For Fall 07, a few ideas reign supreme. Sexy: covered or exaggerated platforms in a fantastic array of colors. Contrast: tweed with patent and rouched suede in feminine shapes. Details: T-straps, apron-style fastenings and clever color combinations.

Why the Mermaid?: The “S-shaped” mermaid on each heel signifies a true Strutt shoe. The legend goes if a mermaid leaves the water she’ll forever walk amongst women. The catch: with Strutt’s curvy signature mermaid at your heels, you’ll walk a part from the rest.
Biggest Qudos: Sienna Miller and Kate Moss aren’t the only Brits wearing Strutt. Adopted Madonna wears them, too.
Season’s Best: The Donata and Elizabeth in Black/Gold.
Still Hot: Having the Elizabeth on Sienna has made it an iconic style. It’s been added in additional colorways for fall.
Up Next: With a heavy influence of Japanese culture, the Spring/Summer 08 collection of platforms with wonderful colors, materials and shapes reflects Japanese shoes (geta) and sandals (zori). Heel designs are pure Ninja, taking the essence of the ninja sword and other weapons to create a unique aggressive feel. You will see shapes inspired by origami - clean designs with a modern, mysterious appeal.

without a doubt, Giuseppe Zanotti’s shoes are worth coveting. his celebrity clientele is quite impressive: Beyoncé, Heidi Klum, Angelina Jolie, Rhianna, and Demi Moore, to name but a few. saks fifth avenue interviews the famous shoe designer for his thoughts on his collection.
for more styles by Giuseppe, check out what zappos couture has online. this pair in particular caught our eye with it’s Swarovski® crystal detailing on it’s mirrored Argento leather finish. and to feel like the belle of the ball, he’s lined it with a lipstick-red satin footbed. click here, to see Designer Shoes at Zappos.com
Buying Dubai
December 8, 2008
“You can’t take all those shoes,” Sweetie told me as I was packing for an extended adventure in Dubai. Because I could only check two bags, I painfully eliminated as many shoes as I could, only to discover that I still did not have room for even these 13 pair I had selected.
Since Dubai is the Shopping Mecca of the Middle East – and I’d be arriving just in time for the month-long Shopping Festival that attracts people from all over the world, shoe shopping would give me a mission for exploring the city.
One of my first excursions was to the famous Gold Souk, an Arabian market comprised of twisty streets and alleys where tiny shops display a breathtaking assortment of real bling—gold, diamonds, rubies, pearls…
Getting lost is part of the fun of exploring the souk and, of course, I did. Down one of the little alleyways the shops displayed cashmere and silk pashminas in every imaginable color and fun embroidered and sequined silk slides made in India. The asking price for the shoes averaged around 50 dirham (about $15) each - perfect for buying in multiples. Unfortunately, the shop did not have my size in the turquoise, green, or gold so I only bought one pair in a deep burgundy. However, in true Arabian form, I bargained and ended up paying only about $8.50.
