Her hip mix of dark Victorian, dolly, and rock ‘n’ roll styles balances between classic vintage charm and pop-culture gloss. Banfi Zambrelli

December 31, 1969

Silvano Banfi was born into a shoe making family in Milan, and by an early age was working with some of the finest houses in Europe. By the time he was 18, he was designing and producing footwear for the likes of Gucci, Bally, Lario & Gianni Versace. After leaving the prestigious ARS Sutoria Institute, he arrived in the U.S. in 1994, honing his talent with Calvin klein, Banana Republic and Coach. At Coach he met Frank Zambrelli, where they collectively launched the brand’s very successful extention into footwear. In 2003, they joined forces once again to pursue a more personal vision of how beautiful shoes should be made.

Frank Zambrelli was headed for medical school when a trip to the European shows radically altered his plans. Heading instead to the Fashion Institute of Technology, he graduated with a dream job at Chanel. John Varvatos, then Cole Haan gave him his next big break, the opportunity to perfect his craft in Europe, Asia and the U.S. His tenure led him to Coach, and the successful launch of the venerable firm’s foray into footwear.

Connecting with Silvano they realized they shared similar design views and a sincere interest in the art of shoemaking, and vowed to someday begin their own studio. In 2003, in a remarkably tiny storefront in midtown Manhattan, Banfi Zambrelli was born.

Dolce & Gabbana

December 31, 1969

It’s not easy to circumscribe the Dolce & Gabbana universe within a definition. A world made up of sensations, traditions, culture and a Mediterranean nature. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have made a trademark of their surnames which is known throughout the world, easily recognizable thanks to its glamour and great versatility. The Dolce & Gabbana woman is strong: she likes herself and knows she is liked. A cosmopolitan woman who has toured the world but who doesn’t forget her roots. A woman who indifferently wears extremely sexy guêpières or bras that can be seen under sheer clothes, contrasting them with the very masculine pinstripe suits complete with tie and white shirt or a men’s vest. She always wears very high heels which, in any case, give her both an extremely feminine and sexy way of walking and unmistakable posture. She loves that so masculine cap imported from Sicily and the rosary of the first Communion which she wears as a necklace. She can indifferently be a manager, wife, mother or lover but she is always - and in whatever case - thoroughly a woman.

Irregular Choice

December 31, 1969

Ever since Brighton UK based designer Danny Sullivan launched his first line in August 1999, he has been on a mission to change everything about the way we see and wear shoes. Danny saw a need for something fresh and fun that maintains imagination and originality above all else. Informed by his traveling experiences, the brand kicked off its first season with its own take on the traditional Japanese split-toe look, which still makes an appearance in every collection. The footwear trade is in Dannys blood his parents set up and ran the infamous Transport shop on Londons Kings Road in its heyday, throughout the 60s and 70s. At 15, Danny left home to explore the sights of London, opening his first shoe shop in Covent Garden by the age of 18. At 23, Danny closed the shop to further discover what the world had to offer. On returning from his adventures, he had brief stints designing for Everlast and Soviet Clothing prior to setting up Irregular Choice. Danny Sullivan’s inspiration is ethereal in its source. It doesnt follow themes or create mood boards to tie down the creative process. He let’s his imagination run wild. The end result is much like a candy store, with every kind of flavor you could wish for. Because Irregular Choice is not designed abiding to trends; its mission is more to break with convention - Danny’s vision always provides a range that is lateral, individual and wearable. Over the last 7 years Irregular Choice has carved itself a niche and inadvertently founded itself a fan club. 2004 saw the launch of a refreshingly different collection for men. Once you discover Irregular Choice, you dont look at shoes in quite the same way ever again.

Jimmy Choo

December 31, 1969

This Malaysian fashion designer was born to a family of shoemakers in Penang in 1961. According to Pendersen, inspired by his family’s profession Jimmy Choo created his first shoe when he was 11 years old. After graduating from Cordwainers college, (at what is now part of the London College of Fashion) in 1986, Choo set up a workshop in Hackney, in London’s East End and then opened a small boutique in upmarket Mayfair. In 1988 British Vogue featured a record breaking 8 pages of his designs, and from 1990 until her death, Choo was under the patronage of Diana Princess of Wales.

In 1996, he joined forces with Tamara Mellon, Vogue’s accessories director, (who recognized Choo’s potential and a niche in the luxury accessories market), and co-founded Jimmy Choo Ltd. Together they sourced shoe factories in Italy to produce footwear on a bigger scale.”It doesn’t matter what you are wearing – if you have good shoes and a good bag, you’ll look right”.

As the success of his designs escalated, according to the official website, Choo then sold his half-stake in the ready-to-wear side of the company in 2001 to Equinox Luxury Holdings, in order to concentrate on his more exclusive line of Jimmy Choo Couture footwear, made under license from Jimmy Choo Ltd. His ready to wear label continues to grow under the guidance of Tamara Mellon and now incorporates other accessories like handbags and sunglasses. The RTW label continues to go from strength to strength, having celebrated more than 11 years of high fashion footwear, sold in around 60 branded stores worldwide. ~ suite101

Mary-Kyri

December 31, 1969

High-fashion women’s designer shoes and high-fashion women’s sneakers made entirely in Italy. Mary-Kyri shoes are not about a woman’s age, they are about the essence of what characterizes a woman.

The Mary-Kyri story began with her childhood fascination for high-heels shoes. As a girl she was obsessed with her mother’s collection and her passion grew into an addiction for designer label stilettos. “I love the way a pair of stilettos can change a woman’s demeanour and also elongate her physique,” she adds, “my shoes are made for elegant, sophisticated, passionate and flamboyant women, they are not about a woman’s age, they are what characterizes a woman…”

After receiving a diploma in Fashion Design, Clothing and Textiles at the Marleston Design Institute in South Australia in 2003, she took design roles within the fashion industry but kept her sights on footwear. In March 2006 her dream was realized with “Virago” her first collection released in Australia and New Zealand. She’s received kudos in top Australian and international fashion pubs: Vogue Australia, Grazia UK, Cosmopolitan UK, Collezioni Italia, Footwear News, WWD Ultimate Accessories Guide, InStyle Australia, Famous UK and Australia, Black and White, Curve and Who Weekly, and her shoes have been seen on Fergie, Kate Moss, Jade Jagger, Kim Kardashian, Pink, Cate Blanchett and Kylie Minogue.

But perhaps more importantly, the line proves Rebecca’s conviction that a non-leather alternative can outperform traditional shoes. In Mink Shoes, Rebecca has designed the footwear for the next generation who knows that glamour and a respect for the environment can walk side by side.

Miss Trish of Capri

December 31, 1969

“The product is popular anywhere the Jet Set and Surfers meet”, quotes Carroll. The Miss Trish of Capri collection references back to the jetset heyday of the 60’s when Brigitte Bardot and Roger Vadim along with Jackie O were jetting from St. Tropez to Capri. The current collection is quite extensive and includes sandals with jewel-encrusted starfish, Aladdin jewels, exotic taj pieces, sea turtles, crabs, pearled octupus and many other captivating and curious creations. It also includes whimsical boat shoes in bold bright colors, mexican-inspired Hurache sandals and portofino-style cork wedges.

Oscar de la Renta (born Oscar Aristides Renta Fiallo) moved to Spain at the age of 18 to pursue painting, but quickly found fashion. In 1963, with the advice from Diana Vreeland, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, he took up residence with Elizabeth Arden and designed custom clothing. Two years later he launched his own label.

De la Renta’s talents receive continual international recognition. Among them, he received the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in 2000 and in 2008 (tied with Proenza Schouler). In February 1990, he was honored with the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. From 1973 to 1976, and from 1986 to 1988, he served as President of the CFDA. He is also a two-time winner of the American Fashion Critic’s Award and was inducted into the Fame in 1973. In 1993 to 2002, Oscar de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Pierre Balmain, becoming the first Dominican to design for a French couture house. (Excerpt: Wikipedia)

Reed Evins

December 31, 1969

The line is a modern interpretation of vintage designs paired with futuristic materials. They embody the sexy and sophisticated attitude of mid-20th-century Hollywood, sparing nothing in their sumptuousness and imagination.
This is not the first shoe company for the brother-sister design team. During the mid-1970s, they created a line of funky footwear called Two City Kids, made famous when Mick Jagger wore their metallic jazz shoes on stage, catapulting them into the edgy rock-and-roll crowd. In the late 1980s, they signed on to design shoes for Anne Klein and Anne Klein Studio. At the same time, a young Manolo Blahnik was hired to design shoes for the Anne Klein collection.
The Evins’ designs were so successful they were forced to close Two City Kids in order to devote more time to Anne Klein. Eight years later, they moved to Cole-Haan to catapult the conservative company into a more fashion-forward image. After five years with Cole-Haan, the two decided to try a new venture, Reed Evins Salon Collection. They presented it to Dawn Mello of Bergdorf Goodman, who snapped up the small collection, and the line was launched.
When the duo turned up again at shoe shows with their own line, Sussex jumped at it. While the Salon collection is a little more serious than Two City Kids, the company still demonstrates a sense of humor with a tongue-in-cheek attitude toward its shoes.
The designers love kinetic ornamentation, such as wires that encase sequins and pearls, and rose petals that shift when moved. For example, a current collection is called “hardware,” and has miniature nuts and bolts as embellishments on the sophisticated mules, boots and pumps.
The credo of the Reed Evins company is still to make feminine, sexy footwear, so he has had to be technically innovative with linings and cushioning to make his shoes more flexible. He calls it “velvet construction,” featuring padded sock linings made of soft sheepskin or lambskin shaped anatomically to fit the foot.
